How do people get it? what is it exactly?
and I'm not talking about being depressed for like one day or just about a breakup.

A chronic and continuous feeling of sadness, hopelessness or desperation. [insert other negative adjectives here!] Can be caused by a multitude of traumatic events, or maybe nothing at all. It's partly genetic and runs in families. Goes along with a wide array of physical symptoms such as headaches, stomachaches, joint pain, trouble concentrating or a regular feeling of sleepiness. It sucks.

Depression can be mild or severe. It can be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain which one is born with or can develop in a person who suffers unfortunate circumstances in their life. Symptoms include sadness (obviously), lack of interest and fatigue.

Oh, yes. It's actually caused by a chemical imbalance. Chemicals such as serotonin or norepinephrine may not be regulated properly, and as a result you may have too much or too little. Neither are good for you. Most often is caused by a defective neurotransmitter, but sometimes there can be more than one "broken" one .Antidepressants basically just block other receptors to fix the flow of chemicals to your brain. Others directly mess with the receptors themselves.

There is no such thing as being "depressed for one day." Mariska and BLaCKPoWeR are correct.

Personally, my really bad depression lasts for about 2 weeks. I feel completely uninspired to do anything. I will go days without eating and when I do eat it will be a small thing just to sustain me. I went through this during the school year and quit a job and an internship because I couldnt physically leave my room for a whole week and also missed a whole week of classes. Even though I usually get better after 2 weeks even events from 3 months ago have made me slip back into it again this last week :/

I was clinically depressed from 2002 - 2003, but before I was diagnosed I was depressed for some time. I always felt like there was a hurt inside me that couldn't be fixed no matter what. I didn't feel like doing anything. It started with bullying, but I think the time I stayed with my dad finally caught up with me as well.
It honestly feels as if it never truly goes away. It creeps up on you and waits until something bad happens to strike.
It happened to me again during October of last year and lasted until March. It went from loneliness to full blown depression. I think it was triggered by being alone at school and home all the time, and people just disappearing from my life. I actually prefer being alone most of the time, so longing for a buddy was a new for me.

I was spending time with a guy I met at school in January. We spent the whole spring semester just hanging with each other. He was really fun to be around. I haven't seen him since school ended. He doesn't live too far away, but I'm not sure if he wants to hang out with me anymore.
