It is an excellent point. There has to be some truth somewhere when cultures from all over the world have mermaid lore going back centuries, going back to times when they could not have shared their stories or ideas, when they had no contact. How does the same image, the same story pop up all over the world if there is absolutely no foundation behind it?
|
The History Channel does the same providing "facts" about..Nostradamus or the Mayans supporting the end of the World that more credible sources write off as sensationalism. That's what these types of docs are meant to do, be extremely believable.
As for the question simple: folklore, myths, storytelling. Things don't have to have a foundation, we are imaginative beings.

THis.
But no, I don't believe in mermaids, or at least what our idea of what a mermaid is: some half-humanoid, half-fish denizen of the deep.

Um, did no one watch Gaga's "You and I" music video? it should be sufficient to answer this question.

That doesn't explain it at all actually, not the similarities across cultures that had no contact.
Of course it is sensationalist but that doesn't mean that it is impossible, doesn't mean these things don't exist. Is it a carbon copy of what was in that documentary? of course not but it is possible.
Possibilities and belief in the unknown are part of what is great about being a human, otherwise explain religion. We all want to believe in things that there is no proof of, some things are more possible than others. Mermaids are completely plausible, just not the disney variety.

Why would it be a fiction?
Like the we've never seen one isnt strong enough to claim that, since 5% of the Ocean have been search and even still in the 5% we find new species all the time!!
And we've never seen god yet billion of people believe in him (including me)!!!!

Out of curiosity, what was the first encounter or sighting of a mermaid?

Aliens and mermaids are completely different things.
In the case of aliens, we may not know of extraterrestrial life at the moment, but the sheer size of the universe is a good clue that we aren't alone.
In the case of mermaids, it just doesn't make sense. There's absolutely no way an aquatic humanoid species evolved to coexist with modern Anthropoids (that's humans). That type of "land to water" or "water to land" movement of a population takes millions of years (see: whales evolved from land-dwelling anthropods).
On top of that, if a land to water shift were to take place, it would be unlikely that a population of "mermaids" (for lack of a better term) would exist at the same time as an unevolved population of humans.
This shouldn't even be a question. It's a matter of simple logic and an understanding of the basic processes of evolution.

Whales, seals, sealions, dolphins and other marine mammals do it.
Collapsible rib cages, enlarged spleens to hold oxygen, they evolved that way. Who is to say there is no humanoid evolved in the same way...

Those all took hundreds of millions of years to evolve to. Not thousands, which the movie suggests. Plus we know about them, because they still breathe oxygen.

Another interesting thing: Almost all ancient civilizations have described some type of aquatic humanoid, despite the fact that they had zero communication.

All cultures that have no contact have plenty of things in common. That's because humans aren't that different, and we all think alike.

I didn't mean to sound pretentious, but I really can't believe that people are seriously considering the existence of mermaids. Saying fish people are real is like saying unicorns are real. They're a type of hybrid (or result of evolution) that, as of now, are strictly parts of fairytales.
