Aretha influenced Rock band legends such as Rolling Stones, her contempories like Tina or Patti, pop legends like Michael Jackson, Prince ; huge voices like Mariah carey and Whitney Houston/Céline Dion; RnB legends like Marvin Gaye or James Brown the Godfather of Soul himself. and all that by doing ONE music genre. Which other female singer has ever touched so many people?
Name me one real artist that are influenced musically (not thematically, visually or vocally) by the two artists you just listed?

I'm not saying it as a disrespectful or condoning manner; I'm simply stating that compared to Whitney and Madonna -- who Navyboy compared -- she doesn't have the cultural impact as the two of them. Everyone knows Aretha is the Queen of Soul, but when comparing Aretha to Whitney, Whitney will always win.
That was my point.

But how does she win on cultural impact when she has influenced more people and has influenced the biggest artists in almost every single musical genre. I don't get it.
We have to take the lead.

If we respect our bodies, they will value theirs.
If we are brave, they will grow up to be fearless.
Until we walk the walk, it just continues to be talk.

I love Aretha but she only has 3 big hit songs. She's a little overrated when it comes to chart performance. When it comes to impact and talent NO ONE is more influential to modern day singers that her.

To me, cultural impact is the impact -- for lack of a better word -- an artist has not just in their country, but worldwide. Yes, Aretha influenced a multitude of artists but I don't think people around the world would name her over the likes of Whitney when asked about R&B.
That said, her influence on other artists isn't to be ignored. She's the Queen of Soul for a reason.

You are confusing popularity and impact. Even WW Aretha had way more impact than Whitney and that's how bad she is because she was as local as they come. See the post below.

Oh and Whitney was not an RnB singer, she was pop.

BnPac better READ in this thread. Aretha being reduced to "just an R&B singer," as if soul music didn't heavily influence other genres. Truly disgusting.
As for the question, obviously impact. I'm quite sure Creed has outsold Bob Dylan, but who is more remembered?

If she had a GLOBAL CULTURAL IMPACT, we would've seen it outside of the UK

Really? Who You Are sold in UK like Animal sold in US.... she's 3xPlatinum in UK, more than 150,000 in US, and 2.5 million WW.... it's funny that you are saying she hasn't record sales when she sold like Ke$ha's debut.

Jessie J has become the first solo artist in the UK to have six Top 10 chart singles from one album.
Jessie J's debut pop compilation, Who You Are, will not stop popping. The album has now had more chart hits than any other album by a British solo artist.
Worldwide Jessie J has sold 11 million singles and over 2.5 million copies of her album.

^ Once again, she was not the first solo artist to have six top tens from one album. She was the first UK female to do it.
Adele, Avril and Lana.
3 very different queens but all rule equally.

Radiohead's album sales are a perfect example of albums having cultural impact/influence but having relatively small sales as compared with the likes if gaga or katy
