Aretha influenced Rock band legends such as Rolling Stones, her contempories like Tina or Patti, pop legends like Michael Jackson, Prince ; huge voices like Mariah carey and Whitney Houston/Céline Dion; RnB legends like Marvin Gaye or James Brown the Godfather of Soul himself. and all that by doing ONE music genre. Which other female singer has ever touched so many people?
Name me one real artist that are influenced musically (not thematically, visually and vocally) by the two artists you just listed?

Are you asking who was musically influenced Whitney Houston? What kinda..

When Joss Stone debuted her first album, she was hailed in Europe as a white girl who was giving a little bit of Aretha Franklin. When a girl here in France has soul in her voice and in her music, the media directly link her to Aretha. What world are you guys living in? The fact that she hasn't sold much WW doesn't change the fact that everybody knows Respect and Think and real music fans know who she is.

Whitney actually blended the genres of Pop and R&B to become to the superstar we know now as Whitney. Madonna thought out of the typical Pop-artist box and expanded what Pop was known as back in the 20th century. Aretha sang well, but that's all she did, sorry.

The two don't necessarily go hand in hand. I think musical and cultural impact is more important.

Cultural Impact.
People like Dusty Springfield and Grace Jones never had sales like Britney Spears (for example) but they both had a FAR bigger impact culturally and musically.

The queen of SOUL inducted into the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME! The 1st female artist at that, so dont say she only has impact on the urban culture/artist.
