View Full Version : The Dark Knight: Reviews, Opinions, Whatever
This is, I hope, the official thread for The Dark Knight, post-release. Post your thoughts on the movie, on its success, whatever. Make sure to mark parts of your post as SPOILERS where warranted.
I'll have more to say later, but, seriously, what a ****ing film. I saw Wall-E before this, and Wall-E was gorgeous...which makes the fact that TDK is all I can think about even more incredible.
I'm not sure if I can say that TDK is "perfect", but it sure as hell was amazing.
Saw it at the 12:01 showing.
All I can say is... that was quite possibly the best film I have ever seen.
sumthintoxic82 7/18/2008, 5:45 AM OMG!!!!!!!...that was the best movie EVER...Heath was AWSOME as joker. Everything was great, from the acting, to the fight scenes....EVERYTHING...They put togther a great cast.
havoc47 7/18/2008, 5:54 AM Saw the 12:01 showing.
I was greatly disturbed by Heath Ledger's performance.
I fell asleep on the ride home, and woke up from a nightmare of the Joker hahaha. Lame, I know.
I don't even know what I thought of it. I did NOT like the ending. I had to pee so bad, if I knew the ending would be the way it was, I would have left to pee the last 5 minutes before the restrooms were rushed.
I enjoyed it, although I think it gave me high blood pressure. LMAO
Darth KcTotal 7/18/2008, 6:23 AM I still have to wait for 1 week coz it's released in Europe on July 25th....
Anthony K. 7/18/2008, 9:20 AM I'm going to watch it tonight! :wooparty: Had to wake up early today so I couldn't go to the midnight showing, lol.
Before the showing me and my friends are going to watch Batman Begins in order to get ready for the best movie of decade. :worship:
yankee04 7/18/2008, 10:16 AM I'm going later today. I'll let you know what I think later or tomorrow.
I Got Soul 7/18/2008, 11:29 AM Saw it at 12:01, 4 sold out screens in a small 8-screen theatre. Un-****ing real, the atmosphere.
And the film, Heath Ledger, EVERYTHING (and I mean that) lived up to my expectations.
The best movie of the new millenium by far.
Semáforo 7/18/2008, 11:38 AM Going to see it tonight, and I can't keep my mind off it!!!
Dancefloor 7/18/2008, 12:41 PM I will watch it this weekend! Can't WAAAAAAAAAAIT!
dianasguy 7/18/2008, 4:19 PM OMG! IT WAS AMAZING! Heath Ledger was so great!
Tibbits 7/18/2008, 4:22 PM I NEED TO SEE THIS.
M Z N A 7/18/2008, 4:37 PM The movie has made 18.4 million in midnight showings last night. It's is the highest-grossing and most attended midnight screening for any film in history. It's also expected to beat POTC record for the opening week.
Tibbits 7/18/2008, 4:49 PM OMFG! :!omg: :worship:

Reuters says it was 18.5 million. Even better. :worship: It broke a record that belonged to Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith and its 16.9 million.
Btw, I know it's difficult, but I hope it beats Spiderman 3 record, which is 151 million.
It was AMAZING
Saw it at midnight also.. the atmosphere was awesome like someone said before
yankee04 7/18/2008, 7:22 PM I guess now I'm going tomorrow instead of tonight because my friends got lazy all of a sudden. I should alert them of the awesomeness that should be coming and maybe they will change their mind.
Fireman25 7/18/2008, 8:02 PM I have seen Dark Night yet, I want to though
CarCAL22 7/18/2008, 8:18 PM Im raising my prediction to $140 million first weekend.
I Got Soul 7/18/2008, 8:39 PM Based on "through the day" numbers and subsequent projections by Fantasy Moguls, the early PROJECTED!!!!! figure for Friday is 63 million. Which would track it to about 155-157 million for the 3-day
This is very preliminary, very estimated. But, it shows that Spidey's opening weekend record is not out of reach.
Rodrigo 7/18/2008, 8:58 PM cant believe that Spiderman 3 made that much :-/ that movie sucks!
WHOA! Best movie I've seen in sooooooo long! You all must see it ;)

MrDeeds 7/19/2008, 1:31 AM Damn, can't wait.
Christopher Nolan’s long-awaited The Dark Knight (Warner Bros), fueled by thrilling IMAX sequences, a brilliantly conceived script and a diabolically skilled performance by the late Heath Ledger, is on its way to shattering records. Lots of them.
Starting with Thursday night’s 12:01a screenings coast-to-coast, which generated an estimated $18.4M by dawn, and continuing through packed matinee and evening showings, The Dark Knight has delivered a staggering $66M on its opening day.

After 3am and 6am showings started selling out, I saw this coming from a mile away, but it's still nothing short of amazing.
The movie is amaaaaaaaaaaazing! Best movie I ever saw.
I Got Soul 7/19/2008, 7:26 AM 66 mil is the new record for top grossing day - besting Spiderman 3's 59 million.
The first half of the movie is boring,..
but the second half is so good!! the story was awesome!!
and heath should bag that Oscar!! that was a ****ing good performance!!
the best pert was when he was wearing that nurse uniform and blew the hospital!!
that was hell funny!!
Semáforo 7/19/2008, 11:09 AM This movie was mind-blowingly amazing. It deserves to break all the records that we all know it will. :worship: The action scenes were outstanding, right from the beginning with the bank.
Fireman25 7/19/2008, 11:37 AM I'm seeing this movie tonight can't wait!
ferpunk 7/19/2008, 12:43 PM ... I will be killed but... the movie was boring. I liked more Batman & Robin :-X
$CBCOOL$ 7/19/2008, 1:04 PM It was cool!
Heath Ledgar's performace was so creepy!
But what was up wit Christian Bale doing to Batman vocie sometimes i couldn't understand him and it sounded like he had a cold or something
But overall i liked it, im not going give any thing away but i liked the extra villain in it too he looked so scary
... I will be killed but... the movie was boring. I liked more Batman & Robin :-X
Go back to the 60's, ya hippie. :-!
(You know, because of the Batman TV series of the 60's...er, shut up. :-$)
Tibbits 7/19/2008, 4:47 PM Someone quick!
So I didn't see "Batman Begins" but I've seen other Batman movies but I really REALLY need to ****ing see this and I can't wait! I should be okay to see it right, meaning I don't have to see "Begins" first?

You'll be fine. I've never seen "Begins" in my life, and I absolutely LOVED this movie. It was easy to follow too.
I Got Soul 7/19/2008, 5:35 PM Watching Begins might help to tie up a few loose ends and make some connections
But you can get by not watching it.
But really - you should watch it, because even though Dark Knight is awesomely epic, Begins is still very badass.
yankee04 7/19/2008, 7:09 PM So I saw the movie.
It was just your typical average...

AWESOME MOVIE THAT WAS SO AWESOME TO BE EXPRESSED IN WORDS.
:)
stephanie xo 7/19/2008, 7:15 PM I never saw the first one and I seen TDK on Friday and it was absolutely amazing...everyone did an excellent job and i think i may be freaked out by clowns now..at least clowns with smeared makeup haha
$CBCOOL$ 7/19/2008, 7:30 PM Did anyone have that movie called "The Wacthmen" show up as a preveiw it looked so freaky
The Dark Knight was pretty much the most unreal and amazing film I've seen in years, possibly my entire life. I loved absolutely everything about the movie, can't wait to see it again. Everybody needs to see this immediately.
Fireman25 7/19/2008, 10:59 PM I saw the movie today it was ok, the ending was sad though that's all I'm going to say for those who have not seen it yet, Heath Ledger did a fantastic job as the Joker he was hilarious
Athens 7/19/2008, 11:15 PM It was just about what I expected, but a little less. The cinematography was amazing, from lighting and camerawork to the visual effects. Everything was the definition of high budget. Maggie Gyllenhaal was a terrible Rachel Dawes. From her first scene to her last scene I couldn't bring myself to feel any kind of emotion for her at all. The dialogue was nothing spectacular, but just good enough to get by. And there were some pretty funny moments I enjoyed.
They did a great job with making it feel as though it was an R rated movie. Instead of showing the brutal nature of the gore filled scenes, they shot it in a way that let your own imagination fill in the blanks. Much better than techniques used in Marvel movies, where you feel like you're 8yrs old watching a censored version.
As for the Joker, I doubt they could have picked a better person. Heath was more twisted than some characters in the creepiest horror flicks, yet he was also very lovable, and I found myself rooting for him over Batman the entire movie. I think his performance is far from anything the Oscars would consider if his death was left out of the equation, but still he's the best Joker there ever was, and most likely ever will be.
"I'm going to make this pencil... disappear!" - Classic.
.Chad. 7/20/2008, 12:23 AM By the way, Maggie Gyllenhaal was a VAST improvement over Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes. I love how natural her acting is. I liked Katie, but Maggie really made me care for the character. She really is one of the best actresses of our generation, she's been fantastic in everything I've seen her in. I also love her unique beauty, way more beautiful than the Hollywood stereotype.

Truth. :worship:
The movie was definitely just okay, definitely not the best of the millennium or ever as some of us are saying. I feel like I need to wait until morning though to make a final decision so I can let it all sink in just because the movie was so ****ing long. :!omg:
Heath Ledger > the movie
Fantastic.. This is the greatest movie of this year.. The Joker was Great..
riskbreaker 7/20/2008, 3:51 AM i LOVE THIS ONE... I WAS REALLY EXCITED FOR THIS!! GRETA JOB!
I'm not a fan of Batman, but this movie totally made me one. I underestimated it a lot. It was the best movie of the decade I can say. Heath Ledger's performance was :worship: I like the whole storyline too. It's not predictable, you won't know what will happen next.
SO.UNCOOL™ 7/20/2008, 7:41 AM I'm going to see this probably on Friday or Saturday. Can't ****in' wait. :wooparty:
Athens 7/20/2008, 11:32 AM 'Dark Knight' sets opening weekend box office record
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A Warner Bros. executive says the Batman sequel "The Dark Knight" has taken in $155.34 million to top "Spider-Man 3" for best opening weekend ever at the box office.
The figures released Sunday show "The Dark Knight" more than $4 million ahead of the $151.1 million first weekend for "Spider-Man 3" in May 2007.
Studio distribution chief Dan Fellman says "The Dark Knight" also broke the "Spider-Man 3" record for best debut in IMAX large-screen theaters with $6.2 million. "Spider-Man 3" opened with $4.7 million in IMAX cinemas.
Stoked by fan fever over the manic performance of the late Heath Ledger as the Joker, "The Dark Knight" also set a one-day box office record with $66.4 million on opening day, Fellman said Saturday.
The movie's Friday haul surpassed the previous record of $59.8 million set last year by "Spider-Man 3." iReport.com: Did you see 'Dark Knight'?
"The Dark Knight" began with a record $18.5 million from midnight screenings, topping the previous high of $16.9 million for "Star Wars: Episode III -- The Revenge of the Sith."
The opening day grosses for "The Dark Knight" far exceeded the full weekend haul of its predecessor, "Batman Begins," which took in $48.7 million in its first three days in 2005.
Reviews were excellent for director Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins," but they were stellar for his "Dark Knight."
"We've really never seen anything like this," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers. "The death of a fine actor taken in his prime, a legendary performance and a movie that lives up to all the hype. That all combined to create these record-breaking numbers."
Buzz had been high for the Batman sequel well before Ledger died of an accidental prescription-drug overdose in January. Trailers last fall revealing Ledger's demented Joker, with crooked clown makeup, turned up the heat even more. The critical acclaim over his performance that built from advance screenings left fans in a frenzy.
"It's a combination of things. Certainly, that's a great part of it, but I think this movie's gross was partly because of the reviews it received and the incredible buzz and word of mouth that preceded it with our early screenings," Fellman said. "And the success and quality of the last one, 'Batman Begins,' delivered by Chris Nolan just set the tone for the opening of this movie."
"The Dark Knight" reunites Christian Bale as Batman, the vigilante crime-fighter tormented by personal tragedy, and co-stars Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Gary Oldman.
The film spins an epic crime duel as Ledger's Joker orchestrates a reign of terror on the city of Gotham aimed to spread chaos and break down the restraint that keeps Batman on the right side of the law.
Although critics are taking the film seriously enough to suggest that Ledger could be in line for an Academy Award nomination, the action-packed movie also delivers as pure summer movie escapism.
"If you're worried about mortgage payments and gas prices, when you're sitting in 'The Dark Knight' for two and a half hours, you're not thinking about any of that stuff," Dergarabedian said.

M Z N A 7/20/2008, 2:18 PM Great. Too bad Ledger won't be able to see his biggest achievement. I haven't seen the movie yet but I will definitely do once it arrives here.
soccer64 7/20/2008, 5:33 PM This is the stuff movie history is made of. Not only was Heath great, but literally, literally every part was played believably well. Bale, Ledger, Gyllenhaal, Oldman, Caine, Freeman, Eckhart, even the bit players, all done exceptionally.
It was way too dark for a super hero movie, the movie is excellent but at the end most of the people in the theater was like "WTF?, That was it?" Not so good ending :o
what I really loved was all the suspense and the action sequences, also Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhar performances were unbelievable amazing! They almost made me forgot that Batman is the main character in this movie
Raguabros 7/21/2008, 10:18 AM It was a very good movie, though I think that reading so many excellent reviews before watching it made me expect too much. Heath Ledger was incredible, and 2Faces was awesome too. Great "villains"
I Got Soul 7/21/2008, 10:41 AM but at the end most of the people in the theater was like "WTF?, That was it?" Not so good ending :o
Wtf theatre were you in? Pretty sure the 2 times I saw it I had the exact opposite reaction from everyone in the theatre.
Athens 7/21/2008, 12:18 PM ^Yeah the theater I was in had a standing ovation at the end. I also heard similar outcomes from friends that went to other screenings.

I'd like to know what movie theater that was too because the last time I was in a movie theater where multiple people complained about the ending was in the final Matrix movie (what a joke that was :toofunny:). I didn't see one person complain about the ending (or the middle or the beginning either) at the movie theater I was at.
letscauseascene1 7/21/2008, 1:07 PM THE DARK KNIGHT was brilliant....

acsolutly amazing. i had tears in my eyes at a few scenes... i do not want to give away the movie, but ugh it was AMAZING!

R`0`K`R 7/21/2008, 5:23 PM The film was so well directed. And the actors were great. Great casting. I loved it!

R`0`K`R 7/21/2008, 7:46 PM I admit I loved B&R when I was a little kid :o
But if I watched it for the first time nowadays I wouldn't have the same reaction.

LOL, I hated it and I was 11 years old. I understand you, but...Batcredit card? NIPPLES?

lmao....I didn't really pay attention to the nipples and such. I loved Poison Ivy and Mr. Freeze. That movie was more targeted to our age at that time anyways. I had like all the action figures LMFAO.
I was thinking which villians they will choose for the next film. Batman seriously has the best villians compared to any other superhero.
Here's who they can choose off the top of my head:
The Riddler: I don't think he would be a good pick. He reminds me of The Joker too much.
Catwoman: The embarrasing film of the same name may be too fresh in people's minds. But I think if they brought her back they would cast the right female (Kristen Kreuk?) and besides Bruce is gonna need a new love interest.
Penguin: I'm banking on them choosing him for the next film. It's been a while since we've seen him but I could not fathom who they would choose to cast.
Bane: He would be great to bring back. And I would like to see him as a clever villian and not represented as an unintelligible brunt like in B&R.
Mr. Freeze: It's not the right time.
Poison Ivy: They should hold off on her until the 4th film. But I think Amy Adams would make a great casting choice.
letscauseascene1 7/21/2008, 9:53 PM i think if they were smart, they would stop making more Batman. this movie was BRILLIANT, there is no way they can top this film, i know they will make another unfortunatly, but it wont fare as well as this one....
R`0`K`R 7/21/2008, 9:55 PM The director Chris Nolan and Christian Bale are signed for two more movies.

Even some critics are saying this, but we all know that's not happening. I'm sure in 2010 we'll have the Justice Leage movie, and in 2011 another Batman.

I don't think The Riddler is that much like The Joker, and I have a strong feeling he's coming next. Oh, and I doubt Nolan would allow him to be only a lunatic freak like Schumacher and Jim Carrey did. Not to mention the actual Riddler from the HQ is much more serious and dangerous.
Btw, we're only thinking about the classic villains. Batman has some amazing 'new' villains, like his old friend from childhood called Silence - that was created by Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee in 2004. And we all know Nolan likes Loeb's job.
Tibbits 7/21/2008, 10:22 PM I saw it again, and now I can say that this is one of the best films ever. Heath Ledger's performance was so good, it makes me want to cry.
Anthony K. 7/21/2008, 10:31 PM ^ I saw it again today too! :worship:
And I'm going again tomorrow. :-!
Mr. Loco 7/21/2008, 11:26 PM I still don't see the movie.
I MUST see it this week!!!
Dancefloor 7/21/2008, 11:29 PM Just saw it today! Best movie ever :worship:
.Chad. 7/21/2008, 11:58 PM I was at a midnight screen, so there was applause, laughter, and cheering after like every line Heath gave.
Then at the end everyone gave a standing ovation.
Only a few people stayed at my theater to watch the dedication in the credits. Shame.
I, personally, love that it actually made even MORE money than was originally estimated. That is glorious.
Spiderman 3 is **** in some many levels. I put it in the same level of awfulness as 'Batman & Robin'.
Okay, hold on there, AK. (haha, kind of rhymed.) Spidey 3 wasn't very good, but B&R would still be hovering over the Batman series if it wasn't for TDK, whereas there's still time to take away the dark cloud that Spidey 3 imposed on the webslinger.
In other words, I think that Spidey 3 wasn't very good, but there aren't very many films that are even on the same level as B&R, in terms of just how awful the film is.
Raguabros 7/22/2008, 9:16 AM LMAO
The Joker dresse as a nurse was surely the funniest thing :lmao:
Anthony K. 7/22/2008, 9:51 AM Btw, it's official, TDK made an impressive 158.4 million first weekend instead of 'only' 155.3 million! :worship: :worship: :worship:

Well, I wasn't saying Spiderman can't recover from that, it surely can. But thing is, the movie was childish, exaggerated and disrespectful to the Spiderman legend, three things that fit very well for the B&R movie as well.
Dead Psycho 7/22/2008, 10:05 AM The movie went #1? How pathetic. Oh well, I'm still gonna see it this weekend. Cause of it's Heath's last film. I bet it sux anyway so it doesn't matter.
soccer64 7/22/2008, 10:34 AM ^ :o. What's with all the negativity? If you think it sucks, you don't need to go see it.

You hate everything BUT Beyonce.
You probably live in her ass :o
If Beyonce had a small Joker encounter (:toofunny:) you'd love the movie.
Anthony K. 7/22/2008, 12:04 PM ^ :o. What's with all the negativity? If you think it sucks, you don't need to go see it.
It's probably because Beyoncé was rejected when she auditioned for the role of The Joker. :toofunny:
Departure 7/22/2008, 12:35 PM ^:ahh:
I think she even got rejected as a victim of Joker too. She isn't appealing enough to even be killed in the movie.
KarlosVzla 7/22/2008, 3:26 PM i saw it yesterday

one of the best films ever!!

V3$$3L. 7/22/2008, 10:47 PM Brilliant.
Heath Ledger had me cringing, and biting my nails, which I never do, and that scene where he had Dent point the gun to his head.......:worship:
This isn't the best movie of all time, for some motifs simply annoyed me (the constant coin-flipping, Batman's lame voice), but the Joker more than compensated if not, MADE this movie what it was. It might have been the 1st time that I actually rooted for the villain rather than the protagonist.
What a loss...:(
Tibbits 7/22/2008, 10:52 PM I think I would masturbate to this movie.

lmao....I didn't really pay attention to the nipples and such.
But I think Amy Adams would make a great casting choice.I read somewhere that according to Chris Nolan the villain of the upcoming film may be The Riddler. He also said that the Penguin may be difficult to portray on this real as possible Batman films. While David Goyer, the writer, said that he prefers to use antagonists from the comic that had not yet been portrayed in film.
I like the idea of bringing Harley Quinn in for the next one. She's be like an equally crazy girl from The Joker's past. Someone quirky like Zooey Deschanel could play her.
They could double up with her and The Riddler, it'd work.
They could also bring in the character Vicki Vale to be Batman's new love interest. Melissa George would be my #1 selection to play her.

KarlosVzla 7/23/2008, 3:22 PM The movie went #1? How pathetic. Oh well, I'm still gonna see it this weekend. Cause of it's Heath's last film. I bet it sux anyway so it doesn't matter.
you hating bitch!!
^ :o. What's with all the negativity? If you think it sucks, you don't need to go see it.
i agree :hey****you: to all the haters out there. i saw it yesterday it was the best movie i have seen so far this year.
Saw it today. All I can say is... wow. Best movie I've seen in a LONG time. It took the whole Batman concept to a new level, and the result is simply epic.
I agree with everyone saying Heath's performance defined the movie. I was laughing like an idiot at Joker's "pencil trick". May he rest in peace.

haha, they must be.
^:ahh:
I think she even got rejected as a victim of Joker too. She isn't appealing enough to even be killed in the movie.
the only way i would find it appealing for beyonce to be killed is if kelly rowland was the killer .other than that beyonce dying in a movie nah:catfight:
Anthony K. 7/24/2008, 3:18 PM Almost 20 million more yesterday in the US, which means over 222 million in 6 days now. :worship:

This is gonna beat out TITATINC!!!
No really, could it? I don't follow movie statistics...
Titanic would be near impossible to beat, which stands at about $600m in US earnings.
MrDeeds 7/25/2008, 2:16 AM Mission Impossible IV: Beat Titanic
It's barely impossible.
Anthony K. 7/25/2008, 10:00 PM $238 million in the first full week. BOW. :worship:
eli's_rhythm 7/27/2008, 1:28 AM I drove with my dad all the way out to Lincolnshire (a half hour away from me) to get tickets for TOMORROW NIGHT'S IMAX version of this movie. It was completely 100% sold out at 6:45PM, a full day before showing.
I already saw the movie last night (it was amazing) but I really wanted to see the IMAX!

I wish there was an IMAX version here!!
letscauseascene1 7/27/2008, 1:38 PM I wish there was an IMAX version here!!
there is one here in IMAX........ its EPIC!!!!!! :)
but as for beating Titanic's records, I wish it could surpass 600 million, but I do not think it can, I think it will hit 400-500 and stop. Titanic had a slow momentum which helped it week by week, this movie I dunno... i WISH Dark Knight beat out Titanic, because it OWNS, but oh well.
Anthony K. 7/27/2008, 3:20 PM No movie will beat Titanic, EVER. At least not in the US.
Dancefloor 7/27/2008, 3:27 PM I just saw it again on IMAX! It was freakin' AWESOME. :worship:

Tibbits 7/27/2008, 4:43 PM Kerty, do you have an IMAX in Brazil? It is a must see. :worship:
I feel like I would see this again in a few weeks. :worship: I can't believe I thought this movie was just okay at first, I think I was just so blown away by Heath's performance that I failed to put the rest of the movie in perspective.

I believe there are some. However, not in my city. :sosad: I'm going to Buenos Aires and Santiago this week, I'll see if they have IMAX there, and if they do, I'll definitely watch! :worship:
Btw, I already watched TDK three times. :-!
letscauseascene1 7/31/2008, 11:43 PM guess they really cant bring Catwoman into any of the next Batman movies after that Halle Berry cat-astrophe lol
This has got to be my favorite movie I have seen since Titanic and Twister
Jesus. This is going to be the eighth highest grossing film of ALL TIME by the time the weekend actuals come out, and, if the rumors are true, there's a chance it could hit 400m on Monday.
I would say that second place on the all-time box office chart is all but guaranteed, at this point. Cherish this, guys, because this is the closest any movie will come to Titanic for a long, LONG time.
soccer64 8/3/2008, 1:02 PM I cry because I know it wont overtake Titanic, which makes me cry again because I had to think about Titanic (:barf:) :cries:
madonnafan18 8/3/2008, 1:19 PM I LOVED this movie! I just saw it on Friday and Heath did way better than I expected! His performance was astounding, and the whole movie was awesome!
