Quite Unfair. FOX and the producers' = minus 40 points. What a waste of time. They should be punished by being forced to watch 14 hours straight of nothing but the WB's Gilmore Girl boopers in a small confined space, with the volume at its highest, and no food/water.(*Evil LOL*)

Katharine needs to step up her game. I really like her and Elliot. Honestly though, I have a feeling Katharine will be more popular than Carrie Underwood. This girl is FIRE. In back-to-back weeks, the “American Idol” voters have kicked off the two people who might actually have a shot at a musical career. First came Paris Bennett, and on Wednesday, Chris Daughtry, widely considered to be one of the favorites to win the competition, instead became the ninth of the original 12 finalists to be shown the door.

While Bennett’s exit last week was no great shock — she was just 17 and too young to compete with the musical veterans — Daughtry’s fate was unexpected. He’d done well enough to impress a core group of fans and guest musical coaches, and didn’t do anything this past week to make Elvis roll over in his grave or throw things at the television — depending on whether he’s still alive or not).

Daughtry consistently has been the best musical act, week in and week out, since the competition began. In fact, after he covered Fuel’s “Hemorrhage” early in the competition, the band reportedly floated the idea of him taking over as their lead singer. It should be noted that Priscilla Presley did not respond to this week’s “Elvis” theme by offering him a similar chance to revitalize the Presley portfolio, but maybe she’s already decided to wait until eliminated “Idol” finalist Kevin Covais gets a little older.

Daughtry instead may have the opportunity to take over as the lead vocalist for Fuel, Creed, or any of the other one-syllable rock bands out there that are missing a singer, since he won’t be locked into the contract given to the “Idol” winner. That wasn’t much comfort when Ryan Seacrest was somberly giving him the bad news, and Daughtry looked shocked when told that he, and not fellow bottom-two finisher Katharine McPhee, was going home.

He wasn’t the only one shocked. Even Simon Cowell looked surprised, probably because it’s finally hitting him that he’ll have to help market the album of the eventual winner. It’s not going to be as easy as it was last season when all he had to do was point Carrie Underwood in the direction of Nashville and start counting the cash.

Can Graymates put Taylor over the top?
Will this year’s champion be Taylor Hicks, who owes much of his success to a manic stage presence that may not translate to the audio-only CD? Will it be McPhee, who copes so well under pressure that she’s had two mediocre weeks in a row? Or will it be feisty underdog Elliott Yamin, who lacks anything resembling star quality?

None of the remaining three have the presence of Underwood or Kelly Clarkson, or the powerful voice of Fantasia Barrino. Hicks may have the winning stage personality of Season 2 winner Ruben Studdard, but it isn’t like Studdard’s career is the roadmap any of the remaining finalists want to follow.

Daughtry alone among the remaining finalists had a musical style that suited both his personality and his voice. There was no doubt who he was when he grabbed the microphone, and unfortunately for him, that wasn’t a recipe for success. He was this year’s designated rocker, and rockers don’t ever win “American Idol.” Maybe he can join former “Idol” also-rans Bo Bice and Constantine Maroulis and form an Idolpalooza tour instead.

Of the remaining three finalists, Hicks appears to be in the best shape. He’s never been one of the lowest finishers in the competition, and he impresses everyone each week despite looking like an out-of-control marionette onstage. And let’s be honest — women dig the gray hair.

At least, one woman does — and no, it’s not Paula Abdul. Well, at least not only Paula Abdul. Rebecca Romijn was in the audience, solely because she’s a huge fan of the show and not at all because she’s in the new “X-Men” movie coming out in a couple of weeks or anything. She requested that Hicks give an encore performance of one of his Tuesday songs, “Jailhouse Rock.” He complied. Turning down a former supermodel is never a smart thing to do, even with her fiancé in the audience. After all, it’s not like she was actually wearing the engagement ring.

Sounds like Romijn would actually buy a Taylor Hicks album, at least. Simon Cowell, for one, has to be starting to hope that a lot of other people will join her.

1) Kelly and Carrie have ZERO stage presence. They are wall-flowers. My big toe more personality than those two combined...

ok so here's my theory... after tonights results show

ive mentioned in my past theory post that i think katharine, taylor and chris have a hard following. since chris is gone, that leaves up to a possible taylor and kat mash up for the finals. but dont leave out the under dog just yet. he has been pretty outstanding the past weeks and he's really in it for a blood bath. ok here's my several theories that could happen

1. if elliot leaves, it would be a head to head between kat and taylor fans. there's no denying both of them have a lot of devoted fans so this is gonna be really up to the mcphans and soul patrol. considering taylor hasnt been in the bottom 3 or 2 at all, its safe to say kat is the underdog.
- if both do good kat 2:1 taylor
- if kat sucks taylor 3:2 kat
- if taylor sucks kat 4:1 taylor

2. if taylor leaves, there's a big possibility elliot could win... but will the producers let that happen? they know better, kat is more marketable. kat may have an advantage of a bigger fanbase, but after elliot's superb performances he has caught the hearts of a lot of people to vote for him. one problem though, do they really like him that much? are they really gonna buy his records? maybe theyre just voting for him cause he has a nice voice. are these people that are voting for him really gonna be there for him after the show? now that is questionable. look at ruben, it was pretty evident clay had a bigger fanbase but did he win? no, america voted for ruben cause i guess he had more contemporary voice. theres a big possibility that this could happen UNLESS, katharine steps it up and shows us when america first fell in love with her. right now kat is the most vulnerable, she came from the favorite to the underdog. although her performances werent as great as her previous once, i personally think they were still good. not as bad as the judges say.

3. if kat leaves, pretty much the same thing as #2 theory... although there are a lot of younger fans of american idol that hate him this could be a big downfall for him. elliot is already getting the votes of non-hardcore idol fans, taylor not getting the younger kids support makes it even worse. with every big fanbase, comes a group of haters. taylor and kat obviously have a good amount of trolls. elliot on the other hand doesnt and he also gets a lot of miscalinous votes, so i think it could be anyones game right now
- if both do good elliot 11:10 taylor
- if taylor sucks elliot 2:1 taylor
- if elliot sucks taylor 3:1 elliot

I disagree, yet it could've pissed off the whitey-tighty people.

Here a few reasons why Chris left from my view:
1.) He didn't perform an upbeat/well known song like Katherine's Hound Dog and Taylor's Jailhouse rock. Both of his performances were kinda dull, forgettable and unintresting compared to the others. He didn't give anything of high "Wow" factor - (Like his rendition of Fuel) which was needed in this stage of competition.
2.) Taylor has soul patrol, which is a huge fanbase. One of the few main reasons why they're voting for him is because of personality, which Chris has one, but its not as vibrant as T's.
3.) The judges praised Elliot more so than Chris, and Elliot had the better night. This launched E past Chris.
4.) Katherine, who didn't do horribly, yet she somewhat derranged an Elvis Signature, had a fan base that voted harder than Chris's. (Uh-Duh?)
5.) Next, I blame the producers again. They've been putting more emphasis on Taylor, while not spreading it equally to the other idols. This is so, because he is likely the more often highest vote-getter of the contestants which may = a good portion of viewers they don't want to lose. This is shown by the allowing of the encore performance, then a few weeks ago by making him pick who the bottom 3 is. But that's OK, the producers don't know how to operate a 30-minute elmination show anyways.
6.) Finally back to voting; Some of Chris's fan voting base weren't on top of it, like the other contestant's bases. For reasons such as "The other Chris fans will take care of the voting."

Don't feel too sorry for American Idol finalist Chris Daughtry. Eventhough he got the boot last night on idol, according to a report from TMZ.Com the hard rock singer will receive an offer tonight to front a 'major band' and he will be given that offer on Extra TV.

I'm not saying training doesn't matter, there are basic techniques in every art form that will generally improve the end result, but mastering those techniques isn't everything.

Theres a difference between artistry and skill. I made the distinction as to whether you personally liked her voice quality or not (and that's subjective), but she is quite a talented/qualified singer.

It's really a shame that Kat is becoming the new McKibben or Trias. She's the most talented singer in the Top 12, with Chris right behind. Chris fans have no reason to be angry at Kat. Lets not forget, it was often said that Kat & Chris would be the final 2.

I seriously hope Elliot goes home so Kat & Taylor can duke it out. But many journalists predict that Elliot will win because Idol is "all politics."

The Finale: Kat & Taylor. It was obvious tonight.

Elliot sucked ass tonight. Taylor the gimmick continues to show no versatility and gets much praise for doing so. Katharine stood up for herself when Obesity & Whora Abdullah tried to shoot her down (thank you Simon). She had the best performance of the entire season with "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" and the other 2 performances were good as well. She guaranteed herself a spot in the finale.

There is no place or format for Taylor in the music industry. He is not marketable at all. But marketing aside, he has shown almost no versatility and it has gone without acknowledgement by the judges. Songs that don't require much vocal effort are continuously being sung by him. He's only getting by immitating the singers (ex: Joe Cocker) of the original songs and the constant whoring he receives from Idol.

This Taylor "Soul Patrol" Hicks gimmick is eve worse than the whole Kellie "Calamarie" Pickler ****. I could see right through him! It sucks 'cause the judged are picking on Katharine for "song choices" and it's funny because she didn't even pick IBICF. This is a SINGING COMPETITION, not "Whoever Picks The Best Song This Week Wins American Idol." That's just stupid.

I personally believe Katharine has the whole package, and I know she will sound AMAZING on CD. Taylor, on the other hand, you can't translate his epileptic seizures on CD. He is going to sound whack. Not even ProTools can save him. I don't understand how he got a huge pat on the back from Simon for "You Are So Beautiful," because I personally think that was his WORST to date. He was off key, and sounded out of tune the entire time... he couldn't even HIT those notes. Blah.

I congratulate them (The Soul Train Passengers, Taylor supporters up to this point, and the people behind AI) for trashing this season, and degrading this competition to a popularity contest rather than a singing-talent show. Taylor has no business being in the 3, he should’ve been gone by the final 10. Way to go them! Thanks to them, this might be the pathetic season of the show's history.

speaking of dial idol, they only based their scores last night on 2 numbers. apparently jim the maker of the software, had issues with having 3 lines for each contestant. i guess there was conflicts on the scripting part. but yeah the program only monitored the first 2 # for each idol. so anything could happen really..

I dunno, a part of me would like to Katherine(or E) to go on, yet the other side is kind of like "Well, since this season is going to hell, why not send it down sooner?"

meh, Dani, I can agree with you most of the time, but this is way off!!! Katherine has not displayed obnoxious behavior at all and the time that she did question the judges...she was on base. Her performances are always above Taylor's and the judges don't seem to give credit where it is due. Taylor winning would be a complete mockery to the show, so AI better do wut's best for them and not allow Taylor to win. Nobody has looked at him as a favorite and continue to see him as the joke that has gone too far...:rolleyes:

I don't get why you couldn't at least recognize that Kat is capable of something decent after her "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" performance last night. I know a lot of Kat haters that said it was one of the best in the season... and that they're original mindset about her had changed.

Well, I do think she has some talent. Her voice can be very pleasant to listen to. I just hate her higher register (which she insists on using every song), and I never really see her connecting to a song, all she does is look dreamily into the camera with a big smile on her face.

American Idol will become pure **** if Taylor wins. He has absolutely no appeal with AI's target audience. He has gotten way too far with lackluster performances, enhanced by his extremely annoying and distracting dancing moves, which might I point out, this is a singing competition and the judges haven't been doing a good job of enforcing this fact all season long. I wanted him gone since day 1 and it still amazes me how this joke keeps going on. Moreso so that ATRL now flashes his "SAFE" icon the corner of the forum...Anyways, how the HELL has he not been in the bottom three? 33.06, 33.26, and 33.68%? He was sooo close to being gone!!! It was of course great to see Kat ascend into the finale but I feel so damn bad for Elliot. He is a far more talented singer than Taylor and he's truly a good person. I hope he does well in life.

I just got back from the AI boards. I spoke my frustration at Taylor Hicks fans. (Probably pissed off a couple dozen of them...which was the most twisted fun part.) But I did so in a nice manner, yet still venting about why Taylor shouldn't be here. And I feel really better now! Now I'd like to root for both Kat&Taylor this next week! Katherine for her talent and Taylor for his personality.

After all the negativity from Randy and Paula the past 3 weeks, on Kat's last performance last night "Aint Got Nothing Left But the Blues"... Randy said he didn't like it and all of a sudden here comes Paula saying "You did a great job" in the most genuine voice, NOT! Did anybody catch that? She sounded so forced to say something nice even though I think she really just wants Kat to leave asap! And also at the end, when Elliot was announced that he was leaving the camera went to the judges and you can see under the table Paula was kicking Randy's leg with the face of "What the ----, Katharine shouldve left!!" The only negative comment I can tolerate is Simon at least he says it how it is, the rest just sound like they really wanna influence the viewers and sabotage Kat. Yes yes yes, we get it Paula and Randy, you hate Kat!

oh wow, I am so lost! I'm didn't even see American Idol until last night (I Tivo'ed it) and all I gotta say is WOW. Katherine's 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' and Taylor's 'You Are So Beautiful' were so good I actually got choked up. Unforunately Elliott was meh this week so I could understand why he was voted out, but still I love the guy, best of luck!

But seriously Taylor and Kat earned their place in the Finals next week, I just hope they give not one but three blockbuster performance so it makes it really hard for people to vote and for one well of a finale.

p.s.: while I honestly can't decide if Katherine's 'SOTR' was better than Taylor's 'URSB' or vice versa, I know we can all agree one one thing:

In Defense of Katherine

Over the past few weeks, and particularly in the last 16 hours, I have read some pretty severe comments on this and other Message Boards about AI5 finalist Katherine McPhee. Common words used in these posts include: snotty, arrogant, rude, ****ty, mean, two-faced, evil, fake, and, worst of all, 'entitled.' Furthermore, according to these self-proclaimed 'critics,' Kat's parents, close family, friends, and anyone who likes her at all, are also all of the above things and more. They don't like the faces she makes when she gets negative comments from the judges. They don't like that she was happy when Elliott was voted off. In short, they think she is a cruel heartless biatch. (Hell, I think they would accuse her of being the anti-Christ if they had any evidence of that fact.)

I happen to have a bit of knowledge of Kat, and of her mother and boyfriend as well, and I felt forced to speak out in defense of these attacks on her character. As I have stated in previous columns, Kat is the opposite of arrogant. In fact, she is perhaps the least confident idol finalist this year. Much of her life, she has been a 'theatre geek.' Well-liked, but not overwhelmingly popular, and a bit shy around groups of people. Performing is a way to 'come out of her shell' for her. She may come off as being over-confident, but this is all a defense-mechanism... a shield she puts up to cover her self-doubt. She has also fought weight issues, and recently lost a bit of weight. She has never thought of herself as truly sexy... or even attractive... and the attention she is getting this season is all new to her.

Consequently, this is all a bit hard for her to adjust to. Praise is unexpected. And being criticized harshly in front of millions of people would be difficult for ANYONE, but it is especially hard for her. She is her own worst critic, and so when the judges criticize her, she takes it very personally, feels she has failed, and becomes immediately defensive. When she is criticized for being 'pitchy', this hits her especially hard, because questioning her musical ear, something she is somewhat confident with, causes her self-doubt to get even stronger.

I wonder if any of you 'critics' have ever performed before an audience before? I have on numerous occasions, and let me tell you, it ain't easy. The nerves and adrenaline propel you through, and frequently you can't remember what you have just done when it's all over. If what you do remember is that it was a pretty good performance, only to be told later that you sucked, it can be pretty annoying and disheartening. Ever heard back a tape of how your voice sounds? Most people's initial reaction is "Ick! Is that how I actually sound?" It is impossible for a performer to know exactly how they look and sound. Criticism (especially from people, like Paula, who are not good with words) can be very hard to understand. The 'tilted head, quizzical eyes' expression Kat gets is just that... she doesn't know what she's being told, or how she can fix it for next time. It doesn't all compute for her.

Kat was not in any way expecting to get this far. Her reaction last week, at Chris' elimination, said it all. The judges savaged her. She fully expected to go home. This week, she expected the same. So, when it was Elliott instead, she reacted with joy. Please, people, can you really blame her? Would you not be joyous in the situation? And it's not as if she jumped for joy (like Paris did every week.) She simply smailed and looked in the direction of her parents. Of course, Taylor appreared to handle it better. But the truth is, Taylor knew full well it wasn't going to be him. The judges have pumped him up for weeks. He had plenty of time to prepare his "Oh I'm sorry for Elliott" response. Kat, however, was caught completely off guard for the second week in a row.

In summary, I feel that the criticism of her 'attitude' is completely innacurate. Notice I am not criticizing those who call her 'wooden' or 'plastic.' 'Plastic' is sometimes an accurate description of her. When she is nervous or doubtful, she pastes on a big smile to cover her emotions. That fake smile is not the real Kat. Feel free to criticize her for that... she is working on it, like all performers, but has a ways to go.

Feel free to criticize her if you don't like the tone of her voice, or if you don't like the style of music she sings, or if you feel she has let her nerves get it the way of her performance. But before you attack her personality, take a moment to consider the fact that your assessment of her personality is being formed with little actual evidence of who she is. And I think this is unfair, innacurate, and sometimes downright mean.

What many people don’t know is that Katherine has struggled with her weight (she recently lost 30 pounds) and does not see herself as beautiful or pageant-worthy. She wears frumpy clothing often because she thinks that’s all she can wear. She is still trying to get used to the fact that she is pretty and that others view her as such. The stiffness we see, and her forced smile, comes from trying to feel comfortable in her own skin, not from overconfidence or entitlement. The fact that she is sometimes unable to fully commit vocally and emotionally to the song comes from this same place of insecurity. Try to view her next time with that knowledge, and see if it changes your opinion of her.

All those who say that **** about Katherine to begin with, are venting on her, as their favorite "Idol" was sent home before her. Apparently, this isn't happening to Taylor or even Elliot before, as they have the "likeability" factor. As for wut EJ posted, that was completely right. You could tell that she was a shy person by her first performance on American Idol...you could tell that she wasn't expecting to go through the first round even. Continuing on through the season, it was easy to notice that she has lost some weight and like any other girl, she was probably self-conscious about it. Anyways, the point I'm trying to make is, that it is common for people, when they lose something (or their choice idol loses) to find something...ANYTHING to rag on the winner about, whether it be her reaction, look, singing ability, ANYTHING in this case. More or less, jealousy is the issue here...:o

i somewhat agree with you... i totally was rooting for diana cause i thought fantasia was pretty overrated but the album definitely proved it wrong otherwise. i really liked her cd, and diana's too.
