New countdown will be up today, but I have a question. You see, I have always done 50 day retirements. For three years the only constant is that my daily countdowns have had 50 day retirements. But you see, with so many good tracks on the horizon and with the competition only rising, I need to know from you guys:

Should I keep the retirement day at 50 days or should I move it to 40 days to accomodate for the tracks that are waiting in the wings and give other songs a better chance? I honestly don't know what to do, so please, any input would be VERY helpful here.

-- Yes, indeed, this song got to #1. Back when B.Y.O.B. retired, this was the first song to get #1. It only spent a day there before a song in the top 3 knocked it out. It did come back for two more days at the top(beating Question! to do it), but has since been held out of the Top 10. This is the lowest it has been in a long time, however, as it had been hovering around the #6-#8 area before. Make no mistake, though: This WILL retire.

8) Audioslave - Doesn't Remind Me(34 Days | Peak: #2 | Low: #10 | =)[/B]
-- For a long time, it was one of the few songs outside of the Top 3 that didn't suffer any backlashes of any kind. Then, out of nowhere, it fell to the #10 spot. It has gotten back closer to the Top 5 since, but it hasn't been quite able to break through once more.

7) Taproot - Calling(14 Days | Peak: #7 | Low: #10 | +2)
-- Actually, this song has been off and on the countdown for over a month. It originally debuted back in late June, but was only able to stay on for six days. Then, ironically, it came back in mid-July..and stayed on for ANOTHER six days. It just returned yesterday, reaching a new peak today. I doubt it's only going to be on for six days this time.

6) Cold - Happens All The Time(29 Days | Peak: #3 | Low: #9 | +1)
-- One of the bigger surprise stories of this countdown, as Cold has not been at #9 since it debuted there. It has not gone lower than #8, but can't seem to get back into the Top 5. Maybe now is the time, we shall see.

5) Avenged Sevenfold - Bat Country(12 Days | Peak: #3 | Low: #8 | =)
-- Debut at #8. Rose up FOUR spots the next day. Reached #3 on the fourth day of its run. Has been at #5 ever since. Yes, it has spent EIGHT straight days at #5. It has practically been the barrier that all other songs must break to get into the Top 5. However, I don't expect it to be at #5 much longer..

4) Switchfoot - Stars(10 Days | Peak: #2 | Low: #7 | =)
-- The youngest song on this countdown, it just premiered back in late July. On its third day on the countdown, it skyrocketed up to #2. It has been a contender ever since, breaking through to the top 3 a couple of times afterward but never quite holding onto it.

3) Rise Against - Swing Life Away(38 Days | Peak: #1 | Days At #1: 8 | Low: #9 | =)
-- Based on its spot alone, it has become the song most likely to retire. Originally, it had a lackluster run, hovering around the #4-#7 spots. That is, until the Nails and SOAD retired. The day after, it was up to #2. The next day, it was #1..and stayed there for 7 straight days. Quite an accomplishment. It fell off from there, but still hung around the #2-#4 area..until just this past week, when it returned to #1 out of nowhere. Now, it is a bonafide contender once again..though it must defeat two major contenders to get BACK to #1 once more.

2) System Of A Down - Question!(21 Days | Peak: #1 | Days At #1: 8 | Low: #4 | -1)
-- There has been a fierce battle for #1 as of late. The #1 spot has been dominated by System Of A Down and, more recently, 311. Other than the one day Rise Against managed to return to #1, System and 311 have been #1 for 15 of the past 16 days, with no clear winner in sight. However, today, it is not System who holds the top spot.

1) 311 - Don't Tread On Me(14 Days | Peak: #1 | Days At #1: 7 | Low: #3 | +1)
-- I wouldn't say this song is as good as, say, Creatures(For A While) or any of their other first singles, for that matter, but good 311 is still good 311, and Don't Tread On Me has basically taken a permanent top 3 slot. It's still unknown whether or not it'll defeat Love Song's mark of 19 days at the top spot, but DTOM is well on its way to doing so...but it does have some pretty stiff competition..

-- Like I said at the beginning of this post, 311 has not been to #1 since the last countdowns I posted. It is, of all things, struggling to stay on the countdown. It has four days left, so it should retire, but no 311 song has struggled quite like this one has on any of my countdowns.

5) Gorillaz - DARE(31 Days | Peak: #1 | Days At #1: 1 | Low: #10 | -1)
-- This is where it starts to get interestng, because the top 10 is split apart by two portions..the bottom half, and the top half. The top 5 is almost unbreakable at this point, as all five songs would be #1 on weaker countdowns. DARE is the second oldest song in the Top 5, but it also has a lot of momentum going with it.

-- Now here's a shocker. I have been saying that this is my least favorite Franz track, but at the same time, a weaker Franz track is still better than a lot of the stuff being released today. The video is the main reason this song is so high, though, because it is, in short, hilarious.

2) Bloodhound Gang - Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo(16 Days | Peak: #2 | Low: #7 | =)
-- And speaking of hilarious, it shouldn't surprise anyone that this song is so high here. I have been singing its praises for the past month now, it seems, and this song, while it hasn't hit #1, should get there soon, though the competition is about to get *fierce* soon.

1) Avenged Sevenfold - Bat Country(44 Days | Peak: #1 | Days At #1: 7(3 straight) | Low: #8 | =)
-- For the third straight day, Avenged Sevenfold cannot be stopped. They have been #1 since Question! retired a few days ago and don't seem to be slowing down. As a matter of fact, it's gaining steam, even with only a few days left. We shall see if it remains #1 until it retires.

-- Beck's last single before this, "Girl", retired. On the contrary, his new single, "Hell Yes", is struggling to stay on. It has never been able to get past the #8 spot and, unless a miracle happens, it might very well stay that way.

9) Blink-182 - Not Now(8 Days | Peak: #6 | Low: #10 | +1)
-- The "new" single from the boys of Blink-182 is also struggling, but has at least gotten close to making the Top 5, unlike the song at #10. I'd personally put it below "I Miss You", "Always" and "Feeling This" but, strangely enough, above "Down". It's a good song, but not even among my favorites from the self-titled album era.

8) HORSE the Band - Birdo(34 Days | Peak: #2 | Low: #10 | -2)
-- I'm sure some of you have never even heard of this song. That's alright, though, because this isn't a song that's destined to light up on the radio. It's absolutely crazy, not of the norm. And it has some of the funniest lines of the year. It was struggling to stay on around a week ago, but now it looks to have leveled out and should retire.

7) Avenged Sevenfold - Beast And The Harlot(4 Days | Peak: #7 | Low: #9 | +1)
-- While not yet on the level of "Bat Country", the new Avenged Sevenfold is more like the REAL Avenged Sevenfold, at least compared to "Bat Country". "Beast And The Harlot" has a truly epic feel to it, with some of the best music I have heard this year. If the truly amazing competition above it wasn't all there, this is a top 5 song, easy.

6) Queens Of The Stone Age - Burn The Witch(29 Days | Peak: #2 | Low: #9 | -2)
-- All I have to say is that this song is a DRAMATIC improvement over the second single, "In My Head". It's more like the Queens Of The Stone Age I know and love. Of course, that equals success on this very countdown.

5) Weezer - Perfect Situation(22 Days | Peak: #4 | Low: #8 | +2)
-- Like with Queens, and unlike a lot of you, I hated the second single from Weezer, "We Are All On Drugs". But also like with Queens, their third single is a huge redeeming factor for yours truly. The only way they could have redeemed themselves more is if they had released "This Is Such A Pity". And there's still time. *cough*

4) Depeche Mode - Precious(19 Days | Peak: #3 | Low: #10 | -1)
-- The next two songs, I caught on to very late. #3 is worse in that aspect, but "Precious" is not exactly a new song. However, I don't really care how old it may be: Any song this good deserves to be on this countdown. This song should be a Top 3 mainstay once a certain "Twisted" track retires in 10 days.

3) Coheed & Cambria - Welcome Home(2 Days | Peak: #3 | Low: #5 | +2)
-- Speaking of old, you might as well pull out a branding iron and stamp on this song, "OLD NEWS". But, like with #4, any song that is this good deserves to be here. The shocking thing is..it's Coheed. This is a band that I wanted to banish to hell for eternal damnation. These guys released possibly one of my ten least favorite songs EVER in "A Favor House Atlantic"..and they make THIS song? How is this even possible? This song is seriously too good to be done by Coheed..but the music, the solo and even Claudio's voice are all great. I still don't like them, but i'll give them credit where credit is due: This song kicks ass.

2) System Of A Down - Hypnotize(19 Days | Peak: #1 | Days At #1: 13 | Low: #2 | -1)
-- The newest song by System Of A Down, like its predecesors, has been on a tear, but this has been on a tear recently that rivals the biggest song on the current form of daily countdowns for yours truly, "B.Y.O.B.". On the same day earlier this year, B.Y.O.B only had 12 days at the top and had fallen to a low of #3. Not "Hypnotize". Not only does it have a day more at #1 at this point, it also has never fallen out of the Top 2. This song is a MONSTER and, as far as i'm concerned, only one song can beat it..

1) Korn - Twisted Transistor(40 Days | Peak: #1 | Days At #1: 12 | Low: #4 | +1)
-- It shouldn't surprise you to learn that the only song that can beat "Hypnotize" at the moment is by my favorite artist ever. It has faced stiff competition throughout its run, especially from SOAD and the Nine Inch Nails, but it has taken days at #1 away from them ever so sneakily and has racked up a nice amount of points on its way to retirement. The video also guarantees that this song is not going to move out of the Top 3 anytime soon.

Fun stat: From 9/27/05 onward, only three songs have been #1: "Twisted Transistor", "Hypnotize" and "Every Day Is Exactly The Same". As a matter of fact, if you want to be technical, counting My Chemical Romance's "The Ghost Of You" among the other three, the last time another artist/song got to #1 was almost TWO MONTHS AGO, on 9/10/05, when "Bat Country" by Avenged Sevenfold got its last day at the top, nearing retirement. That's unbelieveable.

-- This is Straylight Run's first charting song on a daily countdown of yours truly, and a very deserving first charting song at that. The video is the main reason why this song is still on the countdown though, however, the true awesomeness of the song itself is still there right around the 3 minute mark. That's when this song goes from "average emo crap" to "awesome beyond words". It almost BEGS you to stomp along to its infectious instrumental and the vocals are also begging you to sing along with.. The video really helps this part shine with the quick shots inside the cube. Yeah, i'm rambling on now. But yeah, the video? Awesome.

-- You might as well pinch me and color me shocked, because I never would have imagined that this song would have made it on and would have been pretty successful to boot! It likely will not make it to retirement, but "Petrified" is just really fun and infectous and sticks with you long after you listen to it. The video is not GREAT, but the song makes up for that, as Mike Shinoda proves what I knew all along, that he is the true talent of Linkin Park, not Mr. Hahn or Chester, but Mike. And I still need to listen to The Rising Tied. I'm being bad at listening to music these days.

8) Gorillaz - Dirty Harry
7 Days | Peak: #5 | Low: #8 | -2

-- A note beforehand: Normally, a song this good would not be this low, but with the competition above it, it has been knocked around and down to the bottom half of the top 10. However, with said competition also thinning out dramatically within the next couple days, it's arguable that this song will be in the Top 5 once again in no time flat. The chorus with the kids is one of the better choruses that the Gorillaz have done and the music is simply awesome. Even the rapping is not bad, for it works in the context of the music. Those pesky Gorillaz have ANOTHER hit on their hands. If "DARE" doesn't get it done, "Dirty Harry" likely will.

-- Didn't expect this one, huh? The video is not very good, and Madonna's voice can get pretty grating, especially in the chorus, but what makes this song what it is is the BEAT. In a land of catchy songs, i'd argue this is the catchiest of all and the beat is the cause of this. The beat I like to compare the beat of "Hung Up" with is arguably the catchiest song of 2005, "An Honest Mistake" by The Bravery, except a little more disco. So maybe it isn't all that surprising that I like this song. Oh, and that Madonna has been revealed to be God. That too. PRAISE MADGE!

-- While they are strugling to remain around the Top 5, it is clear that Depeche Mode is going to retire. "Precious" has stuck within my conscious since I first heard it and, once I learned what the song was all about, I began to love the song even more. I'd argue that David Gahan's voice has rarely been better and rarely as poignant. This song will definitely end up being one of my favorite songs of the year and it deserves it.

-- First of all, this will NOT be another "Will You". "Will You", for those who don't know, is the worst performing retired track in Hitlist history, not even getting to 140 points. It got to a peak of #4 and then flamed out. This song will be different. "Goodbye For Now" is classic P.O.D., kind of like a mix of "Thinking About Forever" and "Youth Of The Nation" from Satellite. The chorus is amazing, the bridge is even better and the ending sends chills up my spine. If this song doesn't end up being a US pop hit, I will wonder what the HELL is wrong with this country.

-- I said at first, and I quote, "..While not yet on the level of "Bat Country", the new Avenged Sevenfold is more like the REAL Avenged Sevenfold, at least compared to "Bat Country". " Yeah, I still stand by the last part, but i'd say that it's now on the level of "Bat Country", even though "Beast And The Harlot" has not reached #1 like "Bat Country" has. It's possible that I might even like "Beast And The Harlot" more. The guitars kick so much ass, the last chorus is up there as one of my favorite song parts of 2005 and the last guitar riff is, simply put, stunning. I want a video for this song, damnit. A video for this song could send it over the top.

-- Yes, a Coheed song has gotten to 30 days. Unbelieveable, though really not, considering how good this song truly is. I'd argue that this is the most epic song of 2005. Vocals don't even come into the song until a minute into the song. It doesn't even NEED vocals, but they are there anyway, and Claudio finally gets it right and doesn't overdo his voice like in almost every other song they've done. Here, he keeps it a little more simple and, in the process, makes a better song for it. The good music was there, what they needed was for Claudio to simplify. "Welcome Home" is proof that Coheed..*gasp* could actually make a good album if they wanted to. And yes, it seriously hit #1. Shocks me, too.

-- And finally, for the first time since "Keep Fishin'", a Weezer song retires on my countdown! And i'm sure you notice that "#1" by Weezer's peak. Well, System Of A Down was and has been on a tear. Out of nowhere, one day, Weezer jumped three spots and stole away a day from the System Of A Down monster. It has been close to doing so again, as evidenced by them being at #2 multiple times, but it just couldn't overcome "Hypnotize". The video really helped out in this instance. The video is really good and not surprisingly, because Weezer always brings the good video-wise. Having Elisha Cuthbert in your video doesn't hurt, either. "Perfect Situation" will blow up on pop radio, just like "Beverly Hills" did. It's only a matter of time. Welcome back, Weezer.

-- What a surprise. For the 7th time in 8 days, for the 11th time in 13 days, "Hypnotize" rides atop the countdown yet again. At the pace it is going right now, "Hypnotize" is not only on pace to break the #1 mark for the year(set by, who else, System with 33 days for "B.Y.O.B.") but is also a possibility to become one of the top 5 biggest songs in the history of my countdowns. Not bad for a song as soft as "Hypnotize" is. Three more days to go until retirement, three more days to see if "Hypnotize" can break records.
