Who will win?

My money's on Tron.

Potter will open bigger, but Tron will be the tortoise to its hare and win the race.

Thoughts?

There is no way Harry Potter is going to lose out. It's just too big. The fanbase is phenomenal, and it's part 1 of the final installment. Harry Potter is posed to stomp the rest of the movies no matter how good they are. That's just the way it is.

@Celestial - the holiday box office period begins in November. It used to begin at Thanksgiving, but now it's early November. Every year it starts sooner. Likewise the Summer box office period used to start with Memorial Day weekend, but ever since Twister exploded the first weekend of May back in 1996, it's been pushed to the first week of May.

So Tron & Potter are in a battle for the holiday crown.

Potter will open huge and have a massive two-week gross after Thanksgiving. After that it will drop off severely, as the post-Thanksgiving to pre-Christmas period is a box-office graveyard.

Tron won't open as big, but December is the best month to release a film - if you can survive the clutter. Movies have tremendous legs in December, it's very common for a movie to gross 5-6 times its opening weekend. Tron looks like it can survive the clutter.

Disney has shown great faith in Tron. Not only have they been advertising it for nearly a year, but they've already greenlit sequels - they wouldn't do that if they didn't know it would be massive. Plus, it's Disney - no one has their marketing power.

The movie looks and feels fresh and new, it's not a SIXTH sequel.

Come December, it's clear which film will rule 3-D and Imax theatres. :alexz2:

HP movies never do that well. Unless I'm mistaken the Philosopher's Stone is still the most successful one in the US. I think DH will gross somewhere between $320-350 million.

320-350M in the US is pretty damn huge. But it's not record-breaking or anything, it's what The Lion King did back in 1994. You're right in that no HP movie has ever broken 400M in the US - something that's been done by Avatar, Spiderman, Dark Knight, Pirates 2, Toy Story 3, Shrek 2, Transformers 2, Star Wars Ep1 in the last 10 years.

In relation to the amount of hype they receive they have not grossed that much IMO. $320-350M would be the highest gross for any HP film in the US and I think it can do it. That would be impressive.

I agree that Tron is going to be huge. I saw a lot of films over the summer and Tron was advertised nearly all the time, I'm eager to see it. I've been following the US BO for years and December has always been my favourite month for releases. :celestial:

Honey, Lord of the Rings didn't either... and some of the films you said weren't even as successful internationally as they've done domestically...

It probably has to do with it being a British Film or the book genre...

And then this is the last book, so hype it is, just the way Return of the King had back in 2003...

And Star Wars Ep 1 and Transformer 2 sucks...:alexz2:

Is this really an argument? In the US alone, Tron would have to make AT LEAST $300 mill to match HP7Pt1. Tron beating HP7Pt1 WW? BWAHAHAHAHA.

I wouldn't be surprised if it comes close to Deathly Hallows or passes it in the US (even if it's just as likely to underwhelm, but there's no chance in hell Tron matches Deathly Hallows WW.

That said, it does not stand a chance against the superior Harry Potter, which ALWAYS pwns on a worldwide basis.

Prediction:

HP7pt.1: 1,050,000,000
HP7pt.2: 1,100,000,000

Tron Legacy: 800,000,000 - 900,000,000

That said, Tron might do better domestically, only.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Tron: Legacy," a costly 3D sci-fi movie that Walt Disney Co has promoted for more than three years, took the top spot at the North American box office, but with a disappointing weekend haul of $43.6 million, according to estimates issued by the company on Sunday.

Industry observers had been expecting a three-day start in the $50 million range. As openings go this year, the massively hyped sequel to an obscure 1982 movie failed to crack the top-10, and observers have said it will need to rely on strong overseas business to break even.

According to reports, the effects-laden update cost $170 million to make, and more than $100 million to market worldwide. Disney, despite being a public company, is the only studio that refuses to divulge budgets. A studio executive was not immediately available for comment.

Critics trashed the film, which has occupied the attention of two Disney studio regimes in recent years. Jeff Bridges returns to the film as a videogame developer trapped in a virtual environment called the Grid. It marks the feature directing debut of commercials veteran Joseph Kosinski.

The studio, whose live-action pictures are overshadowed by the hit cartoons from its Pixar division, is looking to launch a franchise to take over from its popular "Pirates of the Caribbean" series. Just as the buccaneer theme-park attraction seemed an unlikely basis for a film series, so does "Tron," which appealed only to boys. This time, the studio aimed the film at men and women of all ages.

Disney has been offering tantalizing glimpses to movie fans at the annual Comic-Con convention since 2008, and has raised the heat in recent months with cross-marketing efforts across its theme parks, consumer-products and television wings.

Also new was "Yogi Bear," a live-action/animated update of the old television cartoon. It came in at No. 2 with $16.7 million, a few million dollars short of the expectations of its studio, Warner Bros. But the Time Warner Inc unit said it hoped the Christmas holiday would boost business among the film's core family audience.

Meanwhile, the weekend's other big new release, "How Do You Know," a comedy featuring a high-priced lineup headed by Jack Nicholson and Reese Witherspoon, was a major flop. It earned $7.6 million, falling short of modest expectations. The ranking was not immediately available. The film was released by Columbia Pictures, a unit of Sony Corp.

Potter's been out for weeks now. I don't see it being a serious contender this Christmas.

Tron was a pretty good movie, but I don't think it's good enough to get viewers through word of mouth. The 3D wasn't impressive which was supposed to be a big draw for it.

Potter has already won with it's current gross. Tron won't come near Potter's earnings.
